Happening Now / Artist Activity

I am currently adding art work to the shop on my website at debrakay.art. Most of the work centers around the Sonoran Desert, but I ham also finishing a collection of wort in my "Still Life" series of potted cacti.

ABOUT

My journey into art quilting began in 2016 with a move to Tucson Arizona. And, although I have quilted on and off over the last 30 years, I never anticipated how rewarding expressing myself through art would be. The desert spoke to me; the Catalina Mountains grounded me. Soon I saw inspiration in the mighty Saguaro, Santa Rita Prickly Pear and gangly Ocotillo.
Armed with my favorite technique, couching, I began designing quilts that used not only couching, but applique, free motion machine quilting and hand embroidery to depict desert scenes with mountains, washes, desert flora and fauna. I was hooked.
Stand back from my art and you see the big picture, a preservation of the scene around me. Look closely, and you will see rocks, sand and brush of the desert floor, blooms budding on a prickly pear; a turtle or quail hiding under a bush and much more. It isn’t until you take the close-up view that you see the true nature of the Sonoran Desert.
